There was a horseback riding tour available for hundreds of dollars and the horses walked along the road. We opted to skip that because Evelio said we could ride the horses on the property for free. Score! It's hard to describe the incredible scenery here. The white horses, the rising mist, the lush green foliage, the constant singing of birds, the trickling of the brook....it was so magical! How could we resist experiencing this landscape on horseback?
The only trouble was that the horses weren't super broken. It took Evelio all morning to round two up for us! He kept trying to tell us something in Spanish, but, try as we might, we could not understand him. We supposed he was trying to tell us that the horses were a bit wild and to keep our kids with us. Everyone took a turn, except poor Brigham, who immediately broke out in an allergic reaction and had to go inside, and we all survived with only one scary incident. See, the horses wouldn't respond well to our guidance with the reins and kept going to their mates in the stalls, even though Evelio told us to keep them away. They just did whatever they wanted! When Jade and I took our turns, the horses walked underneath some huge tree branches and we nearly got beheaded! We had to lay nearly all the way back to get low enough!
Adam walked the horse while Lincoln rode it and they walked a little farther away than we had previously been riding. Apparently the horse didn't like the mud it was subjected to walk in under Adam's guidance and somehow bucked Lincoln off! Luckily he just fell in the mud and wasn't under the horses feet and was OK. Phew!
All in all we are glad we chose to ride the horses here because it was so beautiful. We gained a greater respect for the powerful animals and had a lovely, peaceful morning with them.
Evelio got the bikes out for the kids to ride while he got the horses ready. They had to hike them up the steep hill, but the ride down was so fun!
We always found ourselves back at the stall...
This picture is a treasure. It represents so much of what we had to do and how we had to learn patience.
Our time at the farm ended and we had to leave. We were supposed to go to another location near Dominical, but we loved our house so much at Palo Seco that we decided to go back there instead. On the way home our van got stuck off the ferry AGAIN!!! So funny. But luckily there was a helpful guy there who got us on track quickly and we were on our way. We had a flat tire, so we stopped to get it fixed. (Funny story: the workers removed the tire and suggested we buy a new one. They look all around their store and through all the piles of tires to find the right size and FINALLY found one. They charged us for it, put it on the van, and then wanted to see the old one. After searching for it they realized they put on the original tire! Ha ha ha!)
Anyway, while all of that was happening, we just had to wait. Brigham needed to read a story called The Pewter Plate for his Language Arts, so I read it to all of the kids because it is such a good story! We were all into it and the kids just played with rocks for an hour and a half while they listened. They are such good kids and learned to just have good attitudes while things don't go as planned.
