Though we tried our best to wrap everything up before we left, Adam didn't quite get one house sold until after we'd left. He needed to sign the documents with a notary, which only existed 5 hours and a ferry ride away at the embassy in San Jose. We decided to make a little trip out of it and stay the night in a camper trailer. It's always an adventure here! We're learning that things rarely go as planned and we have to adjust our expectations.
We drove our van right onto the ferry. It holds about 100 vehicles. Pretty amazing!
Adam would drive the van below while I'd take the kids up top to find a nice place to do schoolwork on the 1.5 hour ride. We had to do this ferry ride back and forth 3 times in our travels and it was enjoyable every time!
While we were in San Jose we stopped at Walmart and found some cute shirts for Jade and Lily for three bucks! This one looked like our Costa Rica van!
We also got some luxury items like Play-Doh and granola bars:).
The camper trailer sat on the property of a mansion with a pool, so we got to swim there. It was freezing, but the kids had a great time! Then we had fun doing a pull up challenge!
Walmart was amazing. There was a huge parking garage below and this escalator thing took carts up and down it. We actually had a lot of fun exploring the store!
Interesting places in San Jose.... I've heard people say that San Jose is first world. Is it a requirement to have street signs in first world countries? I get it out in the sticks where we are, but the big city? That place is a serious joke to drive through! There is NO way we could have known where to go without our GPS. Brigham Young was an amazingly organized guy when he set up the Salt Lake City blocks. San Jose is a tangled mess. Adam was sooo stressed out trying to get to the embassy on time! We made it and got the document signed and mailed off without any trouble though. Yay!
Ahh, a much needed break. Loving the green turf outside the camper! Ha! It sat in a field with geese waddling by, deer munching in the distance, and birds chirping. We felt far away even though the city sounds were only minutes down the hill.
Adam bought honeycomb at the frutaria and the kids loved chewing on the wax like gum! The kids played a fun game of hide and seek in all the random cupboards of the camper. I think that's a childhood necessity in a camper.
We are in love with frutarias. There are always new and exciting fruits to try! We eat soooo much fruit. Some people come by and fill up there little baskets with a couple pounds of fruit, but we leave with three 20 lb boxes full! It's amazing. Many mouths to feed! We eat lots of pineapples, bananas (frozen bananas make amazing popsicles!), chayote, lettuce, avocados, melons, passion fruits, and mangoes. Not as often we eat other random things like breadfruit, jackfruit, zapote, mamonchino, jacote, and starfruit. Costa Ricans also eat fruits when they are green. We had some green mangoes sprinkled with lemon juice. Super sour, but good!
One thing I love about these people is how resourceful they are. I had to go to the bathroom while Adam picked up the fruit, and I just had to snap a photo of this public bathroom's soap dispenser: an old juice bottle! No shame here!
It's great that you are so open to trying new things.
